Fitzkaplan was established in 1987 by Diane Fitzgerald as a specialty restoration and replication company. With a background in Art History, Fine Arts and Objects Conservation, along with extensive work experience and classical training at the renowned restoration firm of Thorp Brothers. She was trained by masters and now utilizes her skillset working for the trade on unique projects as well as passing along the craft.
Diane with her crew at Fitzkaplan specialize in the use and manipulation of traditional materials, formulas, and historic techniques in proper and contemporary ways. The small firm executes and restores finishes on period and custom furniture, art and objects, often working on site creating sublime historically correct shellac and wax finishes on architectural wooden millwork.
Additional scope includes period painted finishes, gilding, antique and contemporary lacquer work, Japanning, Chinoiserie, French polishing, hand silvered glass, eglomisé, plaster and gesso work, along with many other unique finishes.
